How to Play
How to Play
- Study the six-step sequence marching across the board. One bead is missing.
- Identify the repeating unit (AB, ABB, ABC, etc.) by looking at color, shape, and texture clues.
- Select the correct tile from the choice bank to keep the parade in step.
- Advance through multiple rounds, each with trickier patterns or attributes.
Knowledge Background
Pattern recognition is foundational for algebra, rhythm, and coding. Learners describe sequences verbally, translate them into symbolic forms, and predict future terms. They also strengthen vocabulary for attributes (striped, dotted, solid) and logical thinking (“after every two blue beads comes a yellow triangle”).
Why This Helps Kids
Spotting regularity helps children generalize rules, a skill they’ll use when solving equations or reading music. Explaining “why that tile belongs” builds justification habits and precise communication.
Extensions & Teacher Tips
- Challenge learners to extend the pattern on paper or with manipulatives.
- Ask, “What would the 20th bead look like?” to connect to arithmetic sequences.
- Create “error detectives” where students intentionally break the pattern and classmates fix it.
- Link to Counting Shooting Stars or Build Polyominoes for more visual reasoning.
