How to Play
How to Play
- Start in the 0–10 range, then progress to 11–30 and finally 31–99.
- Flip a digit card on the left, then flip a word card on the right.
- If the digit and the word represent the same number, the pair locks. Otherwise, remember their positions and keep searching.
- Clear the board to unlock the next number band and watch the words become more complex (hyphenated, irregular spellings, etc.).
Knowledge Background
Reading math problems fluently requires quickly translating between symbols (37) and language (“thirty-seven”). This game reinforces:
- Place value vocabulary (tens vs. ones).
- Irregular spellings such as forty vs. fourteen.
- Hyphenation and pattern recognition in compound number words.
Why This Helps Kids
Students who can instantly connect the written word to the numeral are better prepared for multi-step problems, directions, and math-literacy tasks. The memory-game format keeps engagement high while providing the repetition necessary for mastery.
Extensions & Teacher Tips
- After each match, have learners use the number in a sentence (“I see thirty-seven stars”).
- Challenge them to order the matched numbers from least to greatest.
- Introduce rounding by asking, “Is this number closer to 40 or 50?” once a match is made.
- Follow up with Counting Shooting Stars for quantity recognition or Explore Multiplication Grid once numerals feel automatic.
