How to Play
How to Play
- Choose the themed set (simple slices, color wheels, or bar models).
- Flip a fraction card on the left and a visual model on the right.
- Look for the diagram that shades the same proportion of the whole. When they match, the cards lock.
- Clear all pairs to move on; new rounds remix the fractions so the same value may appear with different visuals.
Knowledge Background
Students see fractions represented as areas of circles, strings of emojis, and rectangular bars. Comparing multiple models builds a flexible concept of “part of a whole,” prepares learners for percents, and strengthens vocabulary such as numerator, denominator, and equivalent fractions.
Why This Helps Kids
Many learners memorize rules but struggle to visualize fractions. Matching forces them to examine what portion is shaded and to justify their reasoning. It also highlights that the same fraction can look different depending on how the whole is partitioned.
Extensions & Teacher Tips
- Ask, “How could you draw this fraction another way?” to prompt creativity.
- Have students build the matched fractions with physical fraction circles or paper strips.
- Connect the activity to Match Fractions & Decimals or Visualize Fractions to bridge symbolic, decimal, and visual forms.
- Encourage journaling: learners sketch their favorite model and explain why it helps them.
