How to Play
How to Play
- Review the six uppercase letters on the left and the six lowercase letters on the right.
- Tap one letter from each column to flip the cards. If the cases match (e.g., A/a), the pair locks in place.
- Keep flipping until all pairs are matched, then continue to the next round with a fresh set.
- Challenge yourself by saying the letter name and sound every time you flip a card.
Knowledge Background
Alphabet fluency requires linking three representations: uppercase, lowercase, and sound. Matching games strengthen visual discrimination (spotting subtle differences such as p vs. q) and working memory (remembering which cards were revealed). These skills support decoding, handwriting, and early spelling.
Why This Helps Kids
Young learners often favor one case. Alternating columns makes them practice both equally and reduces confusion later when texts mix cases. The quick rounds also build confidence; students experience success every minute, motivating repeated play.
Extensions & Teacher Tips
- After matching, have students air-write or trace the letter in both cases.
- Ask, “What sound does this letter make? Can you think of a word that starts with it?”
- Introduce mixed-case fonts or handwritten samples to show real-world variations.
- Pair with Pop Letter Bubbles for phonemic practice or Counting Shooting Stars for a calm transition activity.
